Google Update

It seems that googles latest update is now complete and the resulting changes in ranking are filtering through. It looks like tweaking at the edges, including maybe a greater weighting on url and website age, but otherwise the same rules apply, quality links from quality sites will win the day.

Microsoft v Yahoo Continues on.....

Over the weekend Microsoft issued a press release stating that they were still keen to tie up with Yahoo in one form or another even if this didn't result in a takeover. In effect this means that the door is still open, although Yahoos board stress again that a takeover was not in its opinion in the best interests of the shareholders.

This move by Microsoft should help to prevent Yahoo from joining Google for any search collaborations, and simultaneously halt Carl Icahns takeover plans.

This story has a long way to run yet, and each day brings new information to the public domain.

Yahoo conjecture rolls on....

The latest news on Yahoo's likely future is that Carl Icahn the well known investor has begun buying up Yahoo shares ($1.5 Billion in the past 2 weeks) with a view to dethronw the Yaho board. It is believed that he currently has the backing of John Paulson as well as others which to date gives him at least 8% of the stock in his favour.

The Yahoo AGM is due in six weeks so we can expect Carls control to spread further before then.

It also seems likely that a new board if appointed would seek to get Microsoft back to the negotiation table.

SEO Press

It seems that not a day passes by without the UK press including seo articles. It seems to be an increasingly hot topic these days, which is understandable in light of the prospect of tougher times ahead.

There are many online companies who have been doing very nicely out of Google Adwords. Lets face it, if you are making £20,000 a month it is not that important to you if your ad costs are £5,000 a month. It seems that as sales are starting to slow that these retailers are loking to reduce their advertising costs. SEO offers the perfect solution for cost reduction. Depending upon the niche and keywords an SEO campaign will cost a fraction of an equivalent Adwords campaign. SEO Might cost £10,000 or £15,000 in year one and two, but the cost savings really begin to stack up in year three.

I have to predict that the long term costs of SEO are going to rise in time. This is because currently the quantity of sites using SEO is very small as a percentage. This means that once your site achieves a top ten of top five ranking it only requires a maintenance budget to keep it there. However as more and more competition piles into your niche keywords you will need to keep your top ranking via a more proactive strategy across a longer time frame.

Even so, SEO represents a big bang for your buck and is the most cost effective method of attracting qualified leads to your site.

Paid Links....

ckcvruyeFurther to previous comments made here, Google seems to be concentrating its efforts on protecting the integrity of it organic listings. The best way for it to do this is to prevent larger organisations form buying their way to the top via paid links.

Far better that they buy their way to the top via Google friendly Search engine Optimisation services such as mine!

The tightrope currently being walked is tricky to get right, for in effect Google is a seller of paid ads themselves. In actuality they are a published who display dutch auction ads on their pages, and not much more..... but the sum of the parts quite frequently add up to more than the individual components.

When is a paid ad a banner? Are all banner ads going to be penalised? In which event many Google adsense campaigns would surely fall foul?

I get the feeling that it is more the case of being seen to be doing something rather than actually doing something that is the important issue here.

Microsoft v Yahoo Latest news

It seems that Microsoft have pulled out of their proposed bid for Yahoo after Yahoo turned down their latest offer. Yahoo believe that the offer undervalues the company and Microsoft can't see any commercial value in an increased bid.

It looks likely now that Microsoft may launch a hostile takeover and grab the company from the Yahoo board for a knock down price.

We will keep our eyes on the situation with eager anticipation
