Wednesday September 28th 2011 saw Google unveil its latest version of its Panda update. In its efforts to deiver the best results it can within search, Google has again been tweaking its Panda algorithm in order to affect the results given.

Since the initial Panda launch, we have seen several amendments;

Panda Update 2.0: April 11, 2011

Panda Update 2.1: May 10, 2011

Panda Update 2.2: June 16, 2011

Panda Update 2.3: July 23, 2011

Some of the biggest traffic losers seen so far during this update include prnewswire.com (down over 70%), technorati.com (down over 70%) and faqs.org (down over 80%), while hubpages.com (previously hit hard by Panda is up 10%) Youtube.com and android.com (Both Google owned are also both up by 10%).

Precise details of the exact algorithmic changes are always difficult to get hold of, but within a few days the SEO industry will adapt to this latest incarnation and normal service will be resumed.

Google+ on general release

Google+ has now been released to the general public. Initially it was being beta trialed to 25 million users, but over the last few days, the general release has been rolled out.

Google+ is Googles latest attempt to muscle its way into Facebooks ever growing user base. Google+ has a few features that differentiate it from Facebook, so that it hopes to offer something different that will appeal to a mass audience.

Google+ has a "Circles" feature, which allows users to group their friends, business colleagues, family etc so that users can choose what information they show specific people. This will have several advantages over Facebooks current structure as it will hide a users weekend antics from their work environment, instead of the Facebook model which currently shows all of your wall activity to all of your friends.

Facebook has, in the last few days added a new groups section of its own, but it appears to work slightly differently as it promotes your "close friends" posts to the top of the page, but still appears to show everything to everyone.

There is also some confusion over Facebooks complicated account permission controls, which are not particularly straightforward to administer.

Google+ looks to have simplified this process, making operation and consealment of what might be considered to be career damaging information a lot more straight forward.

7 Key Website Attributes for Good SEO

Effective Web Design is essential for good search engine optimization. If you do not tell the search engines what your pages are all about and what you would like to rank for, how do you ever hope to rank for those terms? Page Title is historically the home of the vane. Often filled with corporate identities, tag lines and in essence, wasted as a result. You have 96 characters that are the very first words that appear on your page….. use them wisely for your main keywords.

Alt Text is the text that appears in place of your images if a visitor has images disabled. A happy by product is that although the search engines can’t read image content, they can read your alt text on each of your images. Make sure that you fill the alt text with your main keywords for every image on your page.

Use Heading Tags to focus your keywords for search. The search engines love to see Heading tags used as they indicate what a paragraph or section of your page is going to be about. The more focused your pages, with tight focused Headings the better, as they will be viewed as high quality content and ranked as such.

Each of your pages should ideally be focused on just one subject. If the search engines see that your page is all about one thing from start to finish, it will conclude that it is a better page than one that discusses lots of different subjects. As a direct consequence you will rank higher with that page.

The search engines can only rank you for words that it can find within your content. The more frequently it finds each keyword, the more important your page will be considered for that keyword…. Up to the point when you will be thrown out for keyword spamming. To avoid this, write naturally, fro your readers, but pay attention to what the search engines need to see too.

If the search engines can’t follow your links then your pages will never be found or ranked. Websites designed using Flash, or with Java Script Menus can often suffer in search as the content is inaccessible. Plain simple web design will give you the best search engine rankings.

If you are tempted to cheat by using underhand practices to improve your rankings then be aware of the consequences when you get caught… which you will. Your site will be removed from the rankings and you will have little recourse to getting it re listed. There is little benefit to using “Black hat” techniques as you will be reported if you try to rank for competitive search terms, and if you are targeting low traffic keywords…. Why bother in the first place?

In Summary, concentrating on effective design is essential for good SERPS, planning your site layout before it is build can buy you free rankings that will take a lot longer with an inefficient site design.

It is worth pointing out here at the beginning that I do not sell SEO (Search Engine Optimization), what I sell is website traffic, high quality website traffic that works for my clients. How that traffic is actually achieved is in reality of little importance to my clients.

Too many people are hung up selling their service when they would be far more successful selling the results of that service. People don't want to diet plan, they want to look and feel good. People don't want 18 inch thich roof insulation, they want small heating bills etc

As "Walls" once advertised, sell the sizzle not the sausage.

If you want to create more sales leads, then solve more problems for your customers. We are all in the problem solving business, the key to success is to sell the solution, not the product.
Once you have defined your solution and the target demographic likely to suffer from the problem that you can fix, you will need to get in front of them. Preferably masses of them, preferably when they are ready to buy, with their cash in their hand.....

So where do these prospects live? Where do they hide? Where do they go when they are looking to buy your problem solving solution? More and more the answer is online....

Google dominates the search market which is where over 80% of people online find the things that they are going to buy. Yes, there are a large number of "windowshoppers" as well, but if you set yourself up properly then you will capture all of the window shoppers email addresses so that you can sell to them at a later date. After all, they are at the very least a "Warm" lead if they are looking for your solution in the first place.

Google operates by ranking websites in order of perceived importance, based upon two things, "on-page" information and "off-page" information. The "on-page" information includes all of the written content on your pages as well as page title, alt text, meta data, page headings, image names, etc

The "off-page" information is a measure of your sites popularity, in simple terms Google looks around at how many other websites link to yours...... the site with the most links is the winner.
To get to the top of the rankings you will need to conduct "Due Diligance" with regard to the keywords that you want to rank for. It is a time consuming process getting to the top so you want to make sure that when you do achieve top rankings that you will be rewarded with lots of high quality traffic.

Google are to go head to head with Microsoft when they launch their own operating system next year. Happy with the success that they have seen with Google Chrome, they are determined to make a dent into the 90% market share that Microsoft currently enjoys.

Anyone trying to achieve such a feat is asking a lot, to topple such a giant is nigh impossible to achieve for most, many have tried, but few with pockets as deep as Googles.

So here it is..... Microsofts newest challenger to the Google crown. Has it been worth the wait? Does it offer a different experience significant enough for us to abandon the engine we have come to love?

The answer will maybe take a while to come clear.

In the tale of two search engine launches we can see the difference that $100 of advertising spend can make. Wolfram Alpha launched in the middle of May amid much buzz and chatter, but it's daily traffic fell away quite quickly. Will Bing be able to buy loyalty with its millions?

The Grapg shows the only hard data available to date, namely Google search traffic for each engine on each day. The big difference is that when Bing numbers started to drop Microsoft threw more money at the advertising, and they look set to continue to do so for some time yet.

Will we find the search experience good enough to keep us there? Will Bing overtake Yahoo inside 5 years as is their target?

Time will tell. The most important question is this, will we, years from now be using the phrase

"Bing Me" rather than "Google Me"...........?

Kumo from Microsoft is nearly here

If you were in charge of selling Kumo to the masses, with your hands on the $80m advertising budget that is allegedly available to spend, how would you go about convincing a planet of Googlers to change their search engine?

If it were me I would look to ask questions of Google such as when you search are you really getting the results you are looking for? How efficient is the search process? Do you end up refining your search or giving up without finding what you need?

It is my contention that quite often we fail to find what we are looking for, but stick with google as it is the very best of a bad bunch. Search is still in its infancy and undoubtedly has a long way to go before it delivers what we want every time. The big question is will Kumo deliver better results and thus tempt searchers away?

The recent launch of "Wolfram Alpha" has proved that masses of searchers are at least prepared to take a look at a new engine, later this week we will see what Microsoft has in store for us.

I for one am looking forward to taking it for a spin.

Microsoft near to Kumo Launch

Next week will see the long anticipated launch of Microsofts attempt to wrestle the search market back from Google. After consistently losing market share with Live search this is something of a last chance saloon for Microsofts search division.

After losing out last year in an attempt to take over Yahoo in a $40m buy out Steve Ballmer has dedicated his team to creating a new power in search. It is a tall order, but in the fast changing world of internet search stranger things have happened.

To overturn Googles current dominance will require an exceptional engine that delivers a superior result. Will that happen? Will it be significantly superior to prise traffic from Google? At this point in time who knows, it is a situation I will be paying close attention to.

Can Microsoft achieve their goal of overtaking yahoo within five years? I will keep you informed.

MSN Aim for 2nd spot

Steve Ballmer is targeting second spot behind Google in the search. Following his failed attempt to buy Yahoo and their subsequent deal with Google Mr Ballmer seems to have renewed vigour in his determination to overtake Yahoo and their 11% search share and thus become the main competitor to Google.

Yahoo - Carl Icahn

It has been announced that Carl Icahn has been offered three seats on the Yahoo board ahead of the August 1st AGM. This in effect brings a deal with Microsoft a step closer.

Originally Mr Icahn had hoped to replace the whole board including founder Jerry Yang who he stated was not up to the job, but now Yahoo will keep 8 of the existing 9 directors and the board will increase to 11 to include Carl and the board selecting two from Mr Icahns slate of proposed alternative directors.

It seems that not only did Jerry Yang cave in to avoid the posibility of losing the vote, but Carl Icahn also capitulated on his stated aim of replacing the entire board for much the same reasons.

Shares actually dipped 64 cents on the news to $21.81 which would imply that investors might not share Mr Icahns opinions.

There is a lot spoken about PR Juice, how to get it, what it does and how it can help you, not all of it is useful information though.

The most important aspect of PR is that it is a tool used by Google to establish the value of a link from your site. Yes, it is a measure of your sites worth in the eyes of Google, but it alone will not improve your ranking. A PR 1 can out rank a PR 7, but I would rather have the link from the PR 7 any day.

PR Juice is the effect that PR sites that link to you can have on your site. If you can get lots of PR 6 sites to link to you then you will gain from their PR Juice. This is for the simple reason that Google will see your site as being "recommended" by many "authority" sites. If you continue to collect links from established high value PR sites such as these, you too will become an "authority" site in the eyes of Google and that my friend is the power of PR Juice.

Microsoft has another go at yahoo

It looks increasingly likely that Yahoo as we know it is done and dusted. Fron the latest issues of the Wall Street Journal it is clear that Microsoft are far from finished with their attempts to take over the beleaguered giant.

It is looking like the beginning of August is going to be a very interesting time to be watching this battle as it hots up.

The one thing I don't really understand is that if I owned a second rate search engine that was getting its arse kicked by the market leader, why would I seek to buy the other second rate search engine that is getting its arse kicked by the market leader?

Why wouldn't you recruit the best seo brains and develop your search engine into a worthy rival to Google instead? For $40 billion you can buy a lot of talent and marketing, whereas all they seem to be buying with Yahoo is traffic, and a retreating stream of traffic at that.

Advertisers will pay Google directly for each click on Google paid search results appearing on Yahoo!. Google will then pay us a fee (in industry jargon, traffic acquisition cost) based on revenue realized from click-throughs on ads supplied to Yahoo! by Google.
This carefully structured agreement strikes the right strategic balance, enhancing our financial results while advancing our strategic objectives of being the "starting point" for the most user on the Internet and offering such compelling value that advertisers will see us as the "must buy" in online advertising.
One of our key strategies for achieving these objectives is to capitalize on the increasing convergence of search and display advertising, where we are especially well positioned to compete and succeed. We have already accelerated our efforts to strengthen our presence in display through a variety of initiatives and acquisitions in recent months. Our new commercial agreement with Google enhances our ability to pursue this strategy.
Another key strategy is to open our platform to other developers to optimize monetization for our advertisers and publishers and provide the best experience for our users. We see this agreement as a natural extension of the efforts we have already made toward an open marketplace.
The Google agreement is non-exclusive and provides strategic and operational flexibility for Yahoo!. It allows Yahoo! to use Google's services in those areas where Google monetizes our inventory more effectively but also permits us to continue to use our own search technology in areas where we believe we are most competitive. The net result is that the agreement helps us accelerate one of our strategic aims"closing the monetization gap. At the same time, it allows Yahoo! to continue to compete aggressively in search and display advertising.
Importantly, the agreement does not prevent Yahoo! from pursuing other alternatives that could increase stockholder value. Because the agreement can be terminated by either party upon a change in control, it would not preclude a transaction with Microsoft or any other potential acquiror in the future.
The Yahoo!-Google Agreement Does More for Stockholder Value than Microsoft's Search-Only Hybrid Proposal.
We also want to update you on the conclusion to our discussions with Microsoft regarding a potential transaction. As we explained in our last letter, our board and management held numerous meetings and conversations with Microsoft about its proposal to acquire Yahoo!, both before and after Microsoft withdrew that proposal on May 3. On June 8, our Chairman, Roy Bostock, other independent board members, and members of Yahoo!'s management team again met in person with Microsoft representatives. At that meeting, Microsoft stated unequivocally that it has no interest in acquiring all of Yahoo!, even at the price range Microsoft had previously suggested.
Microsoft did propose an alternative transaction. Rather than acquire our whole company as it had been proposing for months, Microsoft now proposed to acquire only our search business for 1 billion and a share of future search advertising revenue. This proposal alsoincluded an $8 billion investment in Yahoo! but required Yahoo! to commit to a 10-year exclusive arrangement that would have made us dependent on Microsoft for all of our search business. It would also have given Microsoft veto rights on certain future Yahoo! actions, including a sale of Yahoo!. Our board of directors and management made a great effort "and conducted in depth negotiations" to elicit a feasible proposal from Microsoft that made strategic and financial sense for Yahoo!, but without success.
While Microsoft's search-only hybrid proposal may have been helpful to Microsoft, our board and management concluded it would have had a significant adverse impact on Yahoo! strategically, leaving the Company without the operational control of search assets and technology we view as critical to our objective of becoming a leader in the converging search and display advertising business. The board and its advisers also carefully studied the financial impact of Microsoft's proposal and concluded that it would have provided no meaningful improvement to our operating cash flow. In short, this proposal would have generated substantially less value for Yahoo! stockholders than Microsoft has suggested.
Based on all the key factors"strengthening our competitiveness, protecting our strategic position, generating attractive financial returns"the Google agreement is far better than Microsoft's search- only hybrid proposal. That's why we moved forward with it.
Your Current Board of Directors Has the Knowledge, Experience and Commitment to Best Represent Your Interests and Maximize Stockholder Value.
The events of recent weeks underscore the fact that your board of directors is far better qualified to represent your interests in the effort to maximize stockholder value than the slate put forward by Carl Icahn.
Based on Mr. Icahn's narrow agenda, it seems highly unlikely that either he or his slate would bring added value to Yahoo!. Consider the following:
" Mr. Icahn put forward his slate so as to sell Yahoo! to Microsoft, even though he had no knowledge of the sustained efforts made by your current board and management to determine whether Microsoft was willing to engage in a transaction that would provide appropriate value and certainty of achieving that value. On June 8, Microsoft once again made it perfectly clear that it is not currently interested in acquiring Yahoo!.
" Mr. Icahn publicly opposed any alternative form of transactionwith Microsoft. Your board and management, after thorough anddeliberate negotiations and evaluation, separately concluded on itsown that the alternative hybrid deal proposed by Microsoft was,indeed, not in the best interests of the Company or itsstockholders." Mr. Icahn urged, as an alternative to a Microsoft transaction, that Yahoo! find a way to partner with Google that would not preclude a transaction with Microsoft in the future. We have done exactly that through the commercial agreement with Google we announced on June 12.
Simply put, you can choose to vote for a slate of nominees with no articulated plan for the future of Yahoo!"and who now have essentially no alternative agenda to offer you"or you can choose to vote for your existing board of directors which has the independence, experience, knowledge and commitment to navigate the Company through the rapidly-changing Internet environment, execute on our strategic objectives and deliver value for Yahoo! and its stockholders.
It is time for Yahoo! to turn its undivided attention to implementing its key strategies, and we therefore urge you to reject Mr. Icahn's slate and his ill-defined agenda.

In much the same way as the industrial revolution changed the financial landscape of the developed world, the past few years has seen the gathering pace of the latest revolution to affect our world. This time however, the benefits are not limited by accessibility in the same way that used to exist.

Up until the explosion of the Internet into our lives, it was virtually impossible to compete nationally with market leaders in any field , let alone globally. The only advertising mediums were either TV advertising which represents a significant cost barrier to entry, or magazines which are again expensive and quite often niche, national newspapers a costly medium again, or regional advertising in the Yellow Pages. This is one of the most expensive ways of advertising nationally, but until the swift take up of Internet technologies, was a reliable method of finding customers.

There have been several points in history where the businesses that managed to adapt to new technologies the quickest and the best often succeeded where many others failed. There are many instances where pioneers have led the way, Henry Ford invented mass production lines almost single handed and in the same stroke managed to slash his costs, improve product quality and consistency and had a massive advantage over his rivals that has helped to carry the Ford Motor Company through leaner times.

The difference between the companies that adopt new technologies and those that are set in their ways is often profound. Now that is more true than ever as the opportunities for advancement come at an alarming rate.

The Internet has removed the barrier to entry that had previously stood in the way of many would be entrepreneurs. Many good ideas have gone to waste due to a lack of financial backing. With the advent of the Internet and especially Google, that financial barrier behind which many large corporations hid has now disappeared.

Instead of an advertising campaign for a product costing tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds, an efficient sales funnel website correctly optimized for Google and Yahoo will attract thousands of potential customers who are already prequalified to buy from you, for a fraction of the investment. A good website and a couple of years Search Engine Optimization can be bought for less that £5,000 - £10,000 and will be seen by potentially billions of people.

The Internet is in its infancy, we are only just scratching the surface of this information revolution. 98% of all the information online is inaccessible to strangers as it has not been designed for search engines to read. Because of this many good ideas are going to waste. It is only recently that SEO has reached the public consciousness. In 5 or 10 years what will the Internet look like?

The companies that embrace the technology now and use it to their advantage will be the companies who are sitting on top of the pile in a decades time.

The Internet is a truly great leveller, allowing virtually anyone with a good idea and a few pounds for a website to develop a service or a product and to sell it worldwide.
